Lions finish runner-up in state golf tournament

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team finished runner-up in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state tournament May 9-10 at Robert Trent Jones’ Magnolia Cove in Mobile.

The Lions were led by Connor Smith, who finished in a two-way tie for sixth place after posting a two-round total of 9-over par 151.

Smith fired a 6-over par 77 in the first round before finishing the tournament with a 3-over par 74 in the final round.

Trevor Page carded a 12-over par 154 and finished in a four-way tie for 10th in individual standings. John Hayden, who finished with a tournament total 16-over par 158, finished in a two-way tie for 16th in individual standings.

Banks Nash finished 30th in individual standings with his two-day total of 28-over par 170. Brent Gilbert finished one spot behind Nash with his tourname total 31-over par 173.

Tyler Shope of Chelsea, who qualified for the AHSAA Class 5A state tournament as an individual, finished in a two-way tie for fourth in individual standings.

Shope carded an 8-over par 150 in the two-day tournament, including a 1-under par 70 in the final round.
