A group of 128 Thompson High School students earned nearly $3 million in scholarships from a plethora of organizations, companies and colleges this year, and were honored by the school during a recent awards night.

During the awards night, the school recognized the students who will graduate with honors and who have accepted scholarships from businesses and higher-learning institutions.

“We recorded right at $2.8 million in scholarships before the awards night,” said THS 12th-grade counselor Stephanie Payne. “But there have been a lot of last-minute changes, so it’s probably up to about $3 million.”

Because this is Payne’s first year serving as the school’s senior counselor, she said she was amazed by the amount of awards and scholarships the seniors earned this year.

“The amount we had this year was about the same we had last year, but it’s still awesome that they are able to earn that much every year,” Payne said. “It was very good to see them do that well this year.”

Throughout the year, Payne kept an eye out for companies, schools and organizations offering scholarships and then publicized them in the school’s senior newsletter.

The seniors took full advantage of the offers this year, and earned scholarship offers from schools such as Auburn University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Stillman College. The students also earned awards such as the President’s Academic Excellence in Education Award and the Jake Bishop Memorial Scholarship Award.

Because the students earned so many awards, the school was forced to limit the number of presentations at the awards night.

“We tried to keep it to an hour-and-a-half, so we just tried to get some of the local companies and organizations to be there to present the awards,” Payne said. “This year we had so many that it would have taken us hours to have presentations for every student who earned something.”

After the awards night, the students began looking forward to moving on to the next step in their lives, Payne said.

“They are definitely ready to graduate now,” Payne said with a laugh on May 23. “They are excited about it.”
