Shelby County anglers fish in state tournament

Several Thompson High School and Chelsea High School bass fishing anglers wrapped up the 2011 season at the Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association state championship tournament May 21 at Wheeler Lake in Decatur.

The highest finishing boat from Thompson in the club sport’s biggest tournament was the pair Nick Holt and Walker Morgan, who finished 20th in individual standings in the tournament.

Nick Holt and Walker Morgan led the Warrior Bass Assassins with a combined 6.54 pounds of bass.

Austin Herring and Tanner Ellis, who finished eighth in the inaugural state tournament a year ago at Logan Martin Lake, finished 33rd overall in individual standings with a combined 4.68 pounds of bass.

Skylar Harris and Blake Green finished 60th in individual standings after reeling in 1.16 pounds of bass in the tournament.

Wes Ross and Hunter Bates of Thompson also competed in the state tournament but didn’t catch any fish.

The Chelsea Anglers were led by Zac Loveday and Zane Loveday, who combined to catch 3.78 pounds of bass. The Lovedays finished in a two-way tie for 38th overall in individual standings.

Landon Lowery and Alex Borroughs of Chelsea, who also competed in the state tournament last May, finished 58th in individual standings after reeling in 1.24 pounds of bass in the tournament.

Skyliar Harris and Dakota McCrory of Chelsea also competed in the state tournament but didn’t catch any fish.

The anglers started the day with a launch at 7 a.m. at Ingalls Harbor on Lake Wheeler in Decatur. The weigh-in took place at 2 p.m. The tournament featured more than 120 student anglers from across the state. The inaugural state tournament field in 2010 included 36 student anglers.
