Graduation 2011: Third time’s a charm

Just days ago we watched as the class of 2011 processed slowly to the familiar beat of “Pomp and Circumstance.”

As each activity came to a close, I have cheered and watched more intently, as I was aware that this was the last time, and this is the last child.

Seems that it should be easier, I am experienced at this, but that is not the case.

For the last 18 years, my schedule has revolved around school activities: schedules, teachers, homework, exams, projects, football games, basketball games, tennis matches, car pools, band practice, open house, proms, report cards and graduations. When my first son graduated, there were still two younger kids at home, so life was still busy. Then the second son left our nest, it was quieter, but our girl remained.

Girls travel in groups, so our upstairs was still crowded, and she now had two closets to “house” all those clothes. As she goes to college, I’m sure most of the clothes will remain upstairs since her dorm only has a small closet. Unlike those clothes, she and her classmates will move forward to a new world.

The class of 2011 is more prepared to meet the challenges of college and adult life than any other class before them. These students have grown up with technology at their fingertips. They are more comfortable with laptops and cell phones, than with pencil and paper.

They will be challenged to make their world a better place, and we will be the benefactors of their knowledge and leadership.

As your mom, I want only the best for you, sweet daughter, as every parent wishes for their son or daughter of this graduating class.

As Thursday night approached, I knew my ears would hear the sounds of graduation, moms (and some dads) would cry, hats would fly, teachers and classmates would say goodbye, pictures would be taken and eventually framed, memories would be made and you would graduate.

For the third time, I would outwardly show excitement, because my mind tells that is the right thing to do, but inwardly I prayed my heart would listen to my mind. After all, they say the third time’s a charm.

Congratulations LKG and the entire class of 2011!

Love, Mom
