Samford University senior defensive end Alex Davis, a Briarwood Christian School graduate, was named to the preseason Watch List for his position among Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) players by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) on Monday, June 6.
At the conclusion of the season, the CFPA will name a Performer of the Year from each position, as well as a National Performer of the Year, Defensive Performer of the Year and Freshman Performer of the Year.
The CFPA is releasing a different position each week, and the organization released the list for defensive linemen June 6. Davis was one of 38 FCS players named to Monday’s list.
As a junior in 2010, Davis was named second team All-Southern Conference by the SoCon Sports Media Association. Davis finished the year fourth on the team in total tackles with 41, including 30 solo stops.
Davis, a Birmingham native, led the Bulldogs in sacks last season with seven, and he tied for the team lead in tackles for a loss with 10. Davis also tallied four quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery in 2010.
Davis was one of four Southern Conference players named to the list, along with Chris Donald from Chattanooga, Roderick Tinsley from Georgia Southern and Ameet Pall from Wofford. Davis and Alabama State’s Jimmy Daniels were the only two players from the state of Alabama to make the list.
Davis and the Bulldogs will open the 2011 season on Sept. 3, when Samford plays host to 2010 national semifinalist Georgia Southern.
