Spain Park rising senior leads North to doubleheader sweep

Spain Park High School rising senior Mikey White returned home from the USA Baseball team trials in North Carolina just in time to lead the North squad to a sweep of the South in an all-star doubleheader at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, which kicked off the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Sports Week festivities in Montgomery.

White, who started both games at shortstop, finished the doubleheader a combined 4-for-6 at the plate and drove in four runs.

White, who advanced to the second qualifying round for the USA Baseball 18-and-under squad, finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double in the North’s 8-4 win over the South in the series opener. White drove in one run and scored one run for the North team to lead off the series.

White finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple in the North’s 13-0 shutout win over the South in the second game of the series. White drove in three runs and scored one run in the game.

Pelham High School rising senior Ty Pierce started each game for the North and played both left field and right field in the all-star doubleheader.

Pierce, who finished 0-for-2 at the plate in the series opener, went 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple and drove in two runs in the North’s 13-0 shutout win over the South in the final game of the series.

Three Shelby County softball players participated in the All-Star Sports Week softball doubleheader July 11 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Spain Park High School rising senior Erin Hornsby helped the North defeat the South 6-3 in the series opener before the two teams tied at 3-3 in the second game in the series. Hornsby, who played second base, went 0-for-2 at the plate in the opening game.

Chelsea High School rising senior Allie Luster and Oak Mountain High School rising senior Maddie Ridgeway played for the South squad in the all-star doubleheader.

Luster, who played second base, finished 0-for-2 at the plate in the opening game. Ridgeway, who played center field, went 0-for-1 at the plate in the opener.
