Oak Mountain duo leads North to win over South

Oak Mountain High School rising seniors Haley Gerken and Bailee Harnett led the North team to a 2-1 win over the South in an all-star girls’ soccer contest July 12 at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex in Montgomery, which is part of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Sports Week.

Gerken led the North team with one goal and one assist, while Harnett also added a goal in the victory. Gerken played as a midfielder in the contest, while Harnett played as a forward.

After the South took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, Harnett netted the equalizer off an assist from Gerken in the 66th minute of the contest.

Gerken, who was named the North team’s most valuable player, scored the game winner less than 10 minutes later to lift the North to victory.

Thompson High School rising senior midfielder Alyssa Mayer, who had one shot on goal in the contest, also played for the North squad.

Four Shelby County players participated for the North squad in the boys’ all-star soccer contest July 12 at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.

Briarwood Christian rising senior midfielder/defender Benson Mulvaney, Thompson High School rising senior midfielder Jacob Ramsey and Briarwood Christian rising senior midfielder/defender Hunter Smith each played in the contest for the North squad, which fell to the South team 1-0.

Pelham High School rising senior midfielder Karsten Hicks was named to the North squad and played eight minutes as a midfielder and defender in the all-star contest.
