Former Oak Mountain High School volleyball standout Samantha Skinner has had a change of heart since the NCAA early signing period in November 2010.

Skinner, who signed a volleyball scholarship with the University of Alabama last fall, decided to stay closer to home and play for the UAB Blazers.

Skinner is one of six newcomers in the Blazers’ 2011 signing class.

The 5-foot-11 hitter racked up a school-record 808 kills during her final high school season. Skinner averaged 4.7 kills per game as she led Oak Mountain to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state championship match.

Skinner also recorded 74 blocks and compiled 395 digs last season.

“This group of players helps to immediately strengthen an already solid roster filled with lots of returning players,” said UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith. “We are bringing in girls who have competed at high levels of state, national and even international volleyball. These are some exciting additions who will make our entire team better.”
