Post 131 qualifies for state tournament

The Shirley-Holloway Post 131 American Legion baseball team picked up wins over teams from Florence and West Alabama in a sub-state tournament July 23-24 at Birmingham-Southern College to clinch a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

The Post 131 team earned the No. 2 seed in the state tournament at Troy University and will face Dothan Post 12 in its first game Friday, July 29.

The Post 131 team defeated West Alabama 5-2 in its opening game at the sub-state tournament.

Former Shelby County High School standout Braten Dill, who is entering his sophomore season at Wallace State Community College, struck out 10 batters and scattered five hits over eight innings to earn the win on the mound.

Logan Crook, who just graduated from Briarwood Christian School and will play for the University of Alabama at Huntsville next spring, and Cameron Duncan had the only two hits in the game for Post 131.

The Post 131 team defeated Florence Post 11 12-6 in its second game.

Michael Schofield of Thompson High School went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base.  Fellow Warrior Tyler Gamble went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs.  Another Thompson standout, Chad Collum, went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Thompson pitcher Aron McRee pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

The Post 131 team was knocked out of the sub-state tournament following a 4-0 loss to Decatur.
