Yellow Dot a lifesaver in 10 minutes

Imagine, as our community columnist Sandra Thames did, that you are in a vehicular accident. You are badly hurt and unconscious and cannot speak to the first responders when they arrive.

If you’re part of the Yellow Dot Program, then you’ll be taken care of in the way you should be.

If emergency responders see your Yellow Dot decal on the car window, they’ll know to look in your glove box for an informational sheet, which will include your allergies, medications and medical conditions.

Responders will also see, at a glance, who they should contact to get in touch with your relatives, your primary doctor and other emergency contacts.

They will even know which hospital you prefer to be taken to — without ever needing to speak with you.

The program is free for anyone to participate.

While Shelby County RSVP is targeting senior citizens, anyone can benefit from this program. Car accidents don’t just befall seniors.

About a month ago, 400 people had signed up for the program.

Shelby County RSVP volunteers are looking to end up with 10,000.

As Sandra Thames wrote, this program could save your life, and it only takes, at the most, 10 minutes of your time to sign up.

That seems like a pretty good trade-off.
