Former Montevallo golfer one step away from Masters bid

Former University of Montevallo men’s golfer Scott Davenport recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will take place Aug. 22-28 in Erin Hills, Wisc.
If Davenport finishes first or second in the U.S. Amateur tournament, he will receive an invitation to the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga., next spring.
Davenport, a native of Cartersville, Ga., began his college golf career at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville before transferring to Montevallo. Davenport competed for the Falcons from 1982-1984.
Davenport, who also qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 2008, carded a two-day score of 137 before surviving a two-round playoff in a qualifying tournament on the Crabapple course at the Capital City Club in Woodstock, Ga. to earn a berth in the U.S. Amateur Championship.
