FROM STAFF REPORTS

Spain Park High School senior defensive backs Destin Challenger and Devon Brown each made a verbal commitment Aug. 8 to play college football at UAB.

Challenger, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound safety, and Brown, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback, will join Briarwood Christian School quarterback Ben Craft and Chelsea High School safety Jake Ganus at UAB in the fall of 2012. Challenger played linebacker during his junior season, which was his first year with the Jaguars.

Spain Park now has three Division I verbal commitments in its secondary. Challenger and Brown join senior safety Justin Carter, who verbally committed to play college football at Rice University in April.

Spain Park senior cornerback Chris Humes, the fourth starter in the Jaguars’ secondary, currently holds scholarship offers from Auburn, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati, UAB and South Alabama.

Challenger and Brown became the fifth and sixth high school football standouts in Shelby County in the Class of 2012 to make a verbal commitment. The duo will join former Spain Park standout Tamar Mickens at UAB. Mickens is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound redshirt freshman running back for the Blazers.

Briarwood Christian defensive back Kalan Reed verbally committed to Southern Miss earlier this month.
