Westover Senior Center is open for meetings each Wednesday at the Town Hall between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Town Hall is conveniently located on old U.S. 280. A variety of activities are planned for each week, along with a pot luck, covered dish luncheon provided by those who attend. The meetings, which everyone always enjoys, are open to senior citizens of Westover and surrounding areas.

Councilwoman Annette Tyler is the volunteer group coordinator. Annette said the group began in 2005 with a small number attending but has increased and is continually growing.

Members enjoy having a comfortable place to meet together, have lunch and fellowship. Annette organizes games for their enjoyment, ice cream socials and learning experiences. Annette said it is important to keep seniors informed on issues that may be of interest to them. Often speakers attend to discuss issues of health. Speakers from Alabama Humanities, Comfort Keepers and the Commission on the Aging are frequently invited to attend and share information, offer blood pressure checks, along with up-to-date health information.

Members just completed art classes in July taught by volunteer Sandy Johnson, resident of Westover, and said they look forward to craft days. Learning to knit was one of their activities taught by Jane Bailey.

During the month of September, the Harrison Regional Library will be offering a computer class available to the seniors. Please contact the senior center for more information on this activity. The library also offers book reviews and discussions, which everyone enjoys.

Another upcoming event to be watching for is the fourth annual “Music in the Park” day planned for Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is for all seniors and also for surrounding senior centers. Senior members are invited to gather at Westover Park for a special music event. Lunch will be provided, and there is a lineup of guest singers and musicians performing that will certainly kick off the autumn season with excitement. Mark your calendars, and watch the Westover website for upcoming information regarding this event.

Westover citizens would like to thank Annette Tyler, and all others who volunteer their time and efforts to plan and be involved in the much-needed senior center program.
