Saranel Carter Ozley passed away on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011. She was born on March 26, 1918, in Columbiana. Mrs. Ozley is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Julius Ozley, former mayor and long time postmaster of Columbiana, and her brother, William Rux Carter. She was the daughter of Lillian Grace Carter and Rollie E. Carter.

Mrs. Ozley served her community as city clerk of Columbiana, deputy circuit clerk of Shelby County, long time membership in The Vignette Club and retired as a staff member of Rux Carter Insurance.

Mrs. Ozley was a life-long member of the Columbiana United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities over the years, the final being co-historian. She and Jeanette Nivens were responsible for the compilation, editing and writing of the history of the greater than 150-year-old congregation.

Mrs. Ozley is survived by her daughter, Grace Ozley McGraw (John) of Birmingham; granddaughters, Tara McGraw Vines (Jeff), Melissa McGraw Collins (Jonathan); great-grandchildren, Sarah Grace Vines, Leah Elizabeth Vines and Maya Grace Collins; sister-in-law, Jane Fowler Carter; and many nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Ozley were held at Columbiana United Methodist Church Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. with burial following in the Columbiana Cemetery. Pastor Lori Carden officiated. Visitation with the family began at 10 a.m. Saturday, one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
