Montevallo women’s soccer drops conference opener

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team dropped its Peach Belt Conference opener Sept. 9 on the road at Flagler College, 2-1.

The Falcons (1-2 overall, 0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) and Saints combined for 30 shots and 27 fouls in the match while the goalkeepers allowed just three goals.

Montevallo’s lone goal came from sophomore Christine Prince, who now has three goals in just three games this season.

Flagler opened the scoring just 14 minutes into the game as Loren Cate headed in a free kick to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage.

Just three minutes later Taylor Kerr found a streaking Prince behind the Saints defense. Prince beat the keeper to tie the game at one. The match would remain tied at one for the next 53 minutes. The final goal came at the 70:55 mark as Cate found Lindsay Zullo in the box. Zullo slotted the ball in the bottom corner to take the game 2-1.

Junior Alyssa Maxwell played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons as she made four saves. Casey Merson took home the win for Flagler in goal as she made three saves.

Kerr and Prince led the Falcons with three shots each. Senior Kristin Rosato chipped in a pair of shots as well.

The Falcons will be back in action Sept. 11 as they travel to Valdosta, Ga. to take on Valdosta State University who is in the midst of their inaugural season of women’s soccer. The Blazers are currently 3-0 on the season after defeating Georgia Southwestern, Queens and Coker.
