Falcons split a pair of matches at Invitational

The University of Montevallo volleyball team wrapped up the Tusculum Invitational with a 3-1 loss to Lenoir Rhyne University and a 3-1 win over King College.

The Falcons (3-6) were led by freshman Michelle Walker in the first match as she had 12 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Sophomore Michelle Carle took over in match two as she had 14 kills and a .462 attack percentage.

Montevallo dropped the first game against Lenoir Rhyne 25-21 before winning game two 25-16. Lenoir Rhyne then took the final two games 25-19 and 26-24.

Sophomore Manyi Ati was second behind Walker in kills with 11 while Carle chipped in nine. Ati also added three solo blocks and a service ace. Senior setter Anna Garrison recorded another double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs which were both team highs.

Walker finished with nine digs while freshman Brianna Guzinski, senior Jessica Guidry and senior Rachel Wotitzky each ended with seven digs.

In the second match, the Falcons won the first game 25-18 before dropping game two 25-23. Montevallo went on to win the final two games 25-23 and 25-16. Ati finished second in kills with 12 while adding three digs, three blocks and four service aces. She also had a .500 attack percentage. Walker added 11 kills, four blocks and a pair of digs.

Garrison once again recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs but it was Guzinski who led the team in digs with 15. Sophomore Kaleigh Harvey added eight digs to the effort.

Montevallo will return to action Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. as the Falcons host the Coca-Cola Tri-Match with Augusta State and Alabama-Huntsville. The matches will take place at 2, 4, and 6 p.m.
