Lightning finish runner-up in tournament

The Evangel Christian School volleyball team finished runner-up in the Rocket City Blast Invitational tournament Sept. 9-10 in Huntsville.

The Lightning fell to Covenant Blue 17-25, 21-25 in the championship match Sept. 10. Evangel Christian defeated Franklin Road 28-26, 29-27 to reach the title match.

Evangel Christian opened the tournament with a 25-6, 25-9 win over Valley Fellowship before topping Tabernacle Christian 25-10, 25-16. Following a 10-25, 20-25 loss to Covenant Blue, the Lightning defeated Covenant White 25-19, 25-13 in their final match Sept. 9.

Kierson McGriff led Evangel Christian (11-1) with 30 kills in the tournament. McGriff added 14 service aces, 42 digs and two blocks.

Elizabeth Ragland finished with 22 kills, 37 digs and 14 service aces. Kate Foster posted three kills, seven service aces and 32 assists. Erin Morris led the Lightning with a team-high 36 assists.

Erica Williams finished with nine kills, 11 service aces and eight digs. Anna Byers recorded eight kills and 17 digs in the tournament. Ali Wren contributed 15 digs.
