The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team fell to North Georgia College and State University 2-1 in a highly contested battle Sept. 24.

The Falcons (2-6 overall, 0-3 in Peach Belt Conference) gave the Saints all they could handle, including peppering the Saints’ goal with seven shots.

Montevallo’s lone goal came from sophomore Christine Prince as she received a pass from classmate Asgerdur Palsdottir and converted the opportunity with just 30 seconds left in the game.

Montevallo’s offense was clicking early and often as the Falcons gave the Saints a few early scares, including a beautiful give-and-go that came just yards away from being the go-ahead goal early in the first period.

The Saints took the lead in the 28th minute as Kelsey Martin found Emily Dover behind the Montevallo defense for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Dover was able to slip the ball by the diving keeper to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Kaitlin Thomas played all 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons and made four saves on the day, including two one-on-one stops to keep the Falcons within reach.

The first half ended with the Falcons trailing 1-0 but leading in shots 7-5 including five on goal.

The second half was another tight period with both teams creating opportunities. The Saints broke through first in the 65th minute as Dover took advantage of a missed clear by the Montevallo defense and scored on an open net.

The Falcons continued battling and eventually got on the board in the 90th minute as Prince received the pass from Palsdottir and made a move to fake the keeper leaving the net open for her fourth goal of the season.

Montevallo had an even attack with eight different players registering shots.

The Falcons will be back in action Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. as they travel to Columbus, Ga. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne.
