Falcons shine in ITA regional championships

The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team had several standout performances Sept. 25 at the USTA/ITA Southeast Region Championships.

Freshman Niki Polcerova advanced to the round of 16 in the women’s singles “A” bracket, while senior Helene Nordgreen advanced to the round of 16 in the women’s singles “B” bracket. Nordgreen and Polcerova teamed up to advance to the quarterfinal round of the women’s doubles “B” bracket.

Polcerova began her competition in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Elena Mileva of Queens University. Polcerova then took on No. 13 seed May Johnson of Georgia College and State University and defeated the conference foe 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Johnson is the No. 1 singles player for GCSU.

Polerova eventually fell in the round of 16 to No. 1 seed Barbora Krtickova of Armstrong Atlantic State University, who eventually won the event.

In the women’s singles “B” bracket, four Falcons were in action.

Nordgreen began with a hard fought 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Martina Dedaj of Clayton State University. Nordgreen then fell 6-3, 6-0 to Kimberley Hurter of Francis Marion University in the round of 16.

Junior Amy McGucken fell in her first match 6-0, 6-0 to Krista Ingrilli of Flagler College. Freshman Meagan Stevens also fell in her first match 6-1, 6-0 to Raissa Adusumilli of Lander University. Junior Lauren Blair fell 6-2, 6-4 in her first match to Taylor Bland of Converse College.

Nordgreen and Polcerova began their doubles trip with an 8-5 win over the team of Taylor Bland and Olivia Self of Converse College. The pair then defeated Jimena Munoz and Ariel Svantesson of Limestone College 8-3. The closest match of the weekend came next as the pair fell to Stormy Dvorak and Lina Parra of Young Harris College 9-8 in the semifinal round of the “B” bracket.

The Falcons will return to action at the Central Alabama Community College tournament on Oct 7-9.
