For many children in Shelby County, the school day doesn’t end when the dismissal bell rings. For those children, the fun is just beginning as they enter the doors for the Shelby County School’s After School Care Program.

The program is operated by the Shelby County Community Education Program.

The After School Care Program (ASCP) exists to provide a safe, structured environment for school. aged children, assisting them in their physical, educational, social and psychological growth. As a working parent, I utilized the program when my own son was in elementary and intermediate school.

Many days he would not be ready to leave when I picked him up and would tell me “Go home and cook dinner and come back and get me later!” That gave me peace of mind, especially when I would often feel guilty about him having to be at the school for such a long day!

Some of the activities offered during After School Care include homework assistance, games, art and crafts, playground time, sports and snack time. Other activities offered through our Enrichment Program include dance, baton, karate, gymnastics, foreign language, chess and art, just to name a few.

Some students choose to come every day, but the program also allows for a drop-in option, so that the service can be utilized just a couple of days a week. Many students use this option when they have signed up for an enrichment class, such as dance.

In addition to operating ASCP, Community Education also offers a variety of classes for adults interested in becoming life-long learners. These classes include a little something for everyone — whether it is simply to learn a new hobby or to improve skills needed for employment.

Examples of classes include Zumba, ballroom dancing, computers, cake decorating, digital photography, foreign languages and writing workshops.
