Montevallo drops women’s soccer match with Lenoir Rhyne

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team met its second-straight nationally-ranked opponent in the form Lenoir-Rhyne University.

The Falcons (2-5) once again stepped up to the challenge and fell by the slimmest of margins as they held the Bears scoreless for 65 minutes and allowed just one goal a 1-0 loss Sept. 30. The Bears were only able to manage four shots on goal against the Montevallo defensive front.

The Bears came into the game averaging over two goals per game but the Falcons did not back down as they withstood 18 shots but kept the Bears off target as only four of the 18 shots found the goal frame.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas made three saves in the loss while allowing just one goal.

The Falcons had two shots in the match both of which came in the first half. Freshman Octavia Saudners had one shot while sophomore Christine Prince had the other. Both shots were on target but found the hands of Bear goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs.

The lone goal of the match came at the 65:25 mark as Jessica Schob scored of a Mariel Mena corner kick.

The Falcons will now return to Varsity Field on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m. to take on Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken. The Pacers are 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in PBC play.
