Panthers win Dig in the Park tournament


The Pelham High School volleyball team defeated Montgomery Academy 25-23, 30-28 in the Dig in the Park tournament championship match Oct. 1 at Spain Park High School.

Senior Dana Allen led the Panthers (32-16) with 11 kills in the victory.

Senior Porsha Tolbert added nine kills and nine digs. Ashley Kate Kepler contributed seven kills.

Junior Alexis Veal finished with four service aces and six digs. Senior Sydney Days finished with eight digs and a team-high 33 assists.

The Panthers defeated Sparkman 25-10, 25-16 and topped Buckhorn 25-23, 25-16 to reach the title match in the tournament.

Pelham defeated Hartselle 25-21, 25-19 and took down Chelsea 25-11, 25-13 in pool play matches. The Panthers’ lone setback in the tournament came in a 30-28, 13-25, 10-15 loss to Vestavia Hills in a pool play match.

Allen led Pelham with 30 kills  and 33 digs in the tournament.

Tolbert registered with 29 kills, 39 digs and seven service aces. Bradleigh Smith contributed 27 kills and seven blocks. Caitland Smith finished with 29 kills and seven blocks.

Veal finished with 32 digs and 18 service aces. Days recorded 20 digs, five service aces and 128 assists in the tournament.
