Montevallo tames Tigers in non-conference match

The University of Montevallo volleyball team used one of its best performances of the season to down the University of West Alabama 3-0 in a non-conference match Oct. 4.

Sophomore Manyi Ati led a lethal Falcon offense as she had 14 kills on 19 attacks while racking up a .737 hitting percentage. Ati also had five digs and a pair of blocks for the Falcons, who improve to 7-10 overall.

Freshman Michelle Walker chipped in 12 kills while hitting .500. Walker also had six digs and a block assist. Freshman Katie Best, a Spain Park High School graduate, and junior Jordan Spinks had seven kills each while hitting over .300. The Falcons as a team had 45 kills and hit .363.

Senior setter Anna Garrison had 41 assistsa and seven digs, while senior libero Rachel Wotitzky led the team with 10 digs.

The Falcons jumped all over the Tigers in the first set as they built up a lead early in the set. As the Falcons neared the 25-point mark, the Tigers made a late run rattling off five-straight points but the Falcons held on to win 26-24.

The second set began with a 5-0 run by the Falcons as they built a comfortable lead. With the Falcons up 19-11, the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to tie the set at 19-19. Montevallo won six of the final seven points to take the set 25-20.

The third set was all Montevallo as they went on to win 25-18. Hilary Lobenstein led the Tigers with nine kills, while Chanel Davis had eight.

UM will return to action Saturday, Oct. 8 at 12:00 p.m. as the Falcons host UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt Conference action.
