Beall Dozier “Nap,” Gary Sr., age 85, of Vestavia Hills died Oct. 6, 2011. The youngest of 12 children, Nap was born in Georgetown, Ga., to Dr. Loren and Mrs. Beall Gary. He graduated from Georgetown High School and attended officer candidate school at North Carolina State University. He then served in the 87th “Golden Acorn” Division of George Patton’s 3rd Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Following WWII, he graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. degree and a B. Pharm. degree in 1949 and 1952, respectively. He owned Gary Drugs in Mountain Brook for 26 years. Nap was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church and served on the board of directors for the Alabama Epilepsy Foundation. An avid horseman, he was also a member of Vestavia Country Club, the Kiwanis Club, and Sigma Nu fraternity.

Nap is survived by his wife of 57 years, Foy Strang Gary; sons, Beall Dozier “Nap” Gary Jr. (Amy) and William Loren Gary (Nancy Early); daughters, Florence Kirven Gary (Dan Shattuck) and Emily Goode Gary (Tom Proutt); grandchildren, Emily Ann Gary, Beall Dozier “Britt” Gary III, Mercer Elizabeth Gary, Robert Andrew Gary McCormick, David Loren Gary, William Samuel Gary McCormick and James Wilson Gary McCormick; and sister, Margaret Gary Timm.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Canterbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sam Williamson officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service; a reception will be held there immediately following the service. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Eufaula. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. at John’s-Ridout’s Funeral Parlors on University Blvd. The family requests that any donations be made to the Alabama Epilepsy Foundation or the Canterbury UMC Minister’s Discretionary Fund.
