FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team picked up its biggest win of the season as the Falcons downed Lander University (9-2-1, 3-2-1 PBC) 2-1 on the road Oct. 8.

The Falcons (4-8 overall, 2-4 in Peach Belt Conference) used a pair of second half goals to down the previous one-loss Bearcats.

Sophomore Christine Prince provided the game-tying goal, while freshman Aimee Godrey scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes left in the match.

The Falcons have been inches away from a huge victory all season and the pieces finally came together on the field in Greenwood, South Carolina. The Falcons found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime after Jamie Shaw put the Bearcats up 1-0 with less then seven minutes left in the first half.

Heading into the second half the Falcons confidence was up and it finally showed up with 21 minutes left in the game as Prince provided the equalizer off an assist from freshman Emma Greenwood.

Just over 11 minutes later it was Godfrey who struck the back of the net to put the Falcons up 2-1. With just under three minutes left in the game the Bearcats were on a breakaway and looking to score when Montevallo goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas made a heads up play and took out the attacker which gained her a red card. Despite having to miss the Falcons next game the red card helped seal the Falcons victory over the Bearcats who were looking to move into the top-25 with a win.

Thomas made three saves in her 87 minutes of play. Junior Alyssa Maxwell took over for the final three minutes as she did not have to make a save to preserve the Falcons’ victory.

The Falcons will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. as they travel to the University of North Alabama.
