Evangel Christian tops GACS

Evangel Christian School held off a fourth quarter rally to defeat Georgia Alabama Christian School 35-26 in its final regular season game Oct. 14.

The Lightning (7-1) will take next week off before hosting Evangel Family Christian Academy in the Alabama Christian Sports Conference championship game Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at Pelham High School.

Evangel Christian jumped out to a 35-0 lead before Georgia Alabama Christian scored 26 unanswered points late in the game.

Hayden Brown tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Clay O’Neal before completing a pass to Aaron Walker for a 2-point conversion to give the Lightning an early 8-0 lead with 8:44 left in the first quarter.

Pete Sullivan scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and Charlie Bell kicked an extra point to give Evangel Christian a 15-0 lead with 5:32 remaining in the opening quarter. O’Neal rushed for a 17-yard touchdown to push the Lightning’s lead to 21-0 with 3:20 left in the first quarter.

Brown scored on a 40-yard run and Bell added the extra point to push the lead to 28-0 with 5:20 remaining in the first half. Josh Flanders capped the scoring for the Lightning with his 8-yard touchdown run with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter. Bell’s extra point gave the Lightning a 35-0 lead before the hosts scored four unanswered touchdowns.

Brown led the Lightning as he rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Brown also completed 3-of-7 passes for 70 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Aaron Walker led Evangel Christian defensively with six solo tackles.
