Calera falls to Elmore County in region final

The Calera High School volleyball team fell to Elmore County 25-27, 11-25, 20-25 in the championship match of an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A region tournament Oct. 15 at Central High School in Sumter County.

Junior A’Kia Harris led the Eagles with 11 kills in the match. Harris also registered 13 digs as she posted a double-double.

Sophomore Caitlin Ryan added seven kills. Junior Elizabeth Rhinehart recorded a team-high 15 digs in the match.

The Eagles advanced to the region tournament title match following a 25-11, 25-14, 25-19 sweep against Dadeville in the semifinals.

Harris led Calera with 12 kills in the victory. Harris also recorded eight digs and two service aces.

Ryan posted nine kills and eight digs. Junior Amber Sherman finished with six kills and six digs. Rhinehart recorded a team-high eight service aces.

Senior Kellie Rasmussen contributed six service aces and five digs in the victory.

Calera opened the tournament with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-6 sweep against Dallas County in the quarterfinals.

Harris finished with 11 kills and 10 digs to go along with three service aces in the victory.

Ryan chipped in eight kills and five digs. Sherman finished with four kills, six service aces and eight digs. Rasmussen finished with two kills and eight service aces to go along with a team-high 37 assists in the victory.

The Eagles will host Andalusia in an AHSAA Class 4A sub-state match Oct. 20.
