Oak Mountain wins region championship

The Oak Mountain High School volleyball team swept Vestavia Hills 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 in the championship match of an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A region tournament Oct. 15 at Gardendale High School.

Junior Hannah Kowal, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, led the Eagles with 15 kills in the victory.

Junior Emily Cosgrove added 13 kills and five blocks. Junior Hannah Beach, who was named to the all-tournament team, posted a team-high 35 assists.

Oak Mountain swept Mountain Brook 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 in the semifinals. The Eagles swept Minor 25-8, 25-12, 25-14 in its opening match of the tournament in the quarterfinals.

The Eagles will host Oxford in an AHSAA Class 6A sub-state match Oct. 20.

Pelham fell to Mountain Brook 18-25, 14-25, 25-13, 25-16, 12-15 in the consolation match in the tournament.

Sophomore Caitland Smith led the Panthers (39-21) with 16 kills in the match. Smith also recorded five blocks.

Senior Porsha Tolbert finished with nine kills and 22 digs. Fellow senior Dana Allen recorded seven kills and 24 digs.

Senior Sydney Days registered a team-high 36 assists to go along with six blocks and two service aces. Senior Ashley Kate Kepler finished with six kills. Sophomore Alison El-Feraly contributed three kills and four blocks.

Pelham opened the tournament with a 24-26, 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 win over host Gardendale in the quarterfinals.

Allen led the Panthers with 15 kills, 13 digs and three service aces in the victory.

Tolbert contributed 15 kills, 10 digs and two service aces. El-Feraly finsihed with six kills, six blocks and four digs. Junior Alexis Veal finished with seven digs and two service aces. Kepler finished with five kills, four digs and four blocks. Days posted a team-high 52 assists in the match.

The Panthers fell to Vestavia Hills 18-25, 14-25, 25-13, 25-16, 15-12 in the semifinals.

Allen led the Panthers with 16 kills and 14 digs in the match. Tolbert contributed eight kills and 33 digs. Kepler finished with six kills, six digs and three service aces.

Days finished with seven kills, eight digs and a team-high 37 assists. Smith posted eight kills and four blocks. Veal contributed 21 digs.

Pelham will travel to Huntsville in an AHSAA Class 6A sub-state match Oct. 20.
