The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team scored a goal in the seventh minute of overtime to defeat the University of West Georgia 2-1 and give head coach Patricia Hughes her 100th career victory Oct. 17.

Hughes, who has been at the helm of the women’s soccer program since 2001, has captured 92 of her 100 career victories at Montevallo.

Sophomore Christine Prince scored the game-winning goal for the Falcons (5-10) in overtime at the 96:39 mark.

Montevallo outshot the Wolves 17-9 and held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.

The Falcons struck first in the 20th minute, as freshman Octavia Saunders fed freshman Olivia McKenzie near midfield. McKenzie let a shot rip from 45 yards out, which fell over the finger tips of the West Georgia goalie to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 for 62 minutes, but with less than nine minutes to play in the match, Carl Powell took advantage of a counter attack and beat the Montevallo keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

It took just 6:39 into the first overtime period for Prince to find the back of the net. Freshman Aimee Godfrey fed the ball to Prince in the box and Prince did the rest as she battled off a West Georgia defender and kicked the ball past the keeper to give the Falcons a 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Kaitlin Thomas earned the victory in goal as she made five saves and allowed just one goal.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. as they host Peach Belt Conference foe UNC-Pembroke. The match will mark Senior Day, as well as Think Pink, as the Falcons battle breast cancer while honoring their three seniors.
