Montevallo pair named conference runners of the week

University of Montevallo junior Haley Evans of the Falcons’ women’s cross country team and freshman Zackery Walsh of the men’s cross country team were each named the Peach Belt Conference Runners of the Week following standout performances Oct. 14.

Evans led the Falcons at the Queens University of Charlotte Royal Cross Country Challenge as she snapped the Montevallo school record for a 5K race.

Evans smashed the school record for a 5K run with her time of 18:54 at the event. The junior became the first Montevallo runner ever to break the 19-minute barrier and beat her own personal best time by more than 20 seconds.

Evans finished 36th overall in individual standings in the 21-team, 200-runner event while leading Montevallo to a 10th-place finish amid many Division I programs. Evans’ 18:54 mark is the fastest 5K time in the Peach Belt Conference this season.

Walsh set another school record this past week as he led the Falcons at the Queens University of Charlotte Royal Cross Country Challenge.

Walsh smashed the Montevallo 8K school record with his time of 26:59 at the event. Walsh became the first Montevallo runner to ever to break 27 minutes in an 8K event, beating the previous school record which he held by 35 seconds. The freshman finished 71st overall in individual standings in the huge 19-team, 174-runner event.

Evans and the rest of the Falcons return to action Saturday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. as they travel to the Peach Belt Conference Championships in Aiken, S.C.
