Hornets top Oak Grove in final week

Chelsea High School senior Jake Ganus finished with 233 total yards on offense and accounted for three touchdowns in the Hornets’ final regular season game Oct. 27 in a 35-7 win on the road at Oak Grove.

Ganus rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries in the victory. Ganus completed 8-of-14 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown.

Oak Grove took an early 7-0 lead in the game before the Hornets reeled off 35 unanswered points in the final three quarters.

Ganus scored on a 44-yard run with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter and Taylor Martindale added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

Aki Coles scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and Martindale added the extra point to give the Hornets their first lead at 14-7 with 5:16 left in the first half. Coles reeled in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Ganus with 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter and Martindale added the extra point to give Chelsea a 21-7 lead at the break.

Coles scored on a 56-yard touchdown run and Martindale added the extra point to push the Hornets’ lead to 35-7 in the opening minute of the third quarter. Ganus capped the scoring for the Hornets with his 8-yard touchdown run with 9:58 left in the game. Martindale’s extra point accounted for the final margin.

The Hornets will travel to Muscle Shoals in the opening round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A playoffs Nov. 4.
