Montevallo closes regular season with conference win

The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team closed out the regular season with a dominating 4-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 29.

The Falcons (10-3-4 overall, 5-1-2 in Peach Belt Conference) secured the No. 2 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament with the win. Montevallo, the defending Peach Belt Conference tournament champion, will host Francis Marion University in the conference tournament quarterfinals Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

The Falcons got rolling early as senior Phil Jackson scored off an assist from freshman Alex Morton. The Falcons waited until the 43:32 mark to strike again, as senior Tyson Eyo used a flick to beat the defense and then beat the Hurricanes’ keeper to put the Falcons up 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Hurricanes held the Falcons scoreless most of the second half, but with less them eight minutes to play, junior Mike Rinzema scored off an assist from junior Steven Didi. Despite the 3-0 lead, Montevallo was not finished as freshman Patrick Dougall scored a goal off an assist from junior Alwyn Adams with just 2:21 left in the match.

Montevallo outshot the Hurricanes 16-6 and had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons committed just eight fouls in the game, while the Hurricanes had 16 fouls and were given three yellow cards.
