COLUMBIANA – Smoke from a controlled burn in Coosa County made its way through the air in South Shelby today.

During the lunch hour, heavy smoke filled downtown, and it smelled like something nearby was on fire. It wasn’t.

Columbiana Fire Chief Johnny Howard Jr. said the smoke traveled across Lay Lake from Coosa County. He said his department has received numerous calls about the smoke, as have volunteer fire departments in Kingdom and Shelby.

Howard said the smoke has also filled the air in Wilsonville.

“It’s dissipating as it comes through Columbiana,” he said.
