The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team got some valuable experience prior to tip-off of the 2011-2012 season despite a 83-48 loss at Division I Samford University in an exhibition contest Nov. 7.
Samford had three scorers in double figures and forced Montevallo into 25 turnovers in the contest.
Montevallo was led by senior Shavonne Seymore, who scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior transfer Teanna Boxley chipped in 12 points while going a perfect 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.
Senior Tiffany McClure added seven points, while junior Zena Nasiloski and freshman Taylor Beverly shared the rebounding lead with Seymore as they all had five boards each.
The difference in the game came in turnovers and field goal percentage. The Falcons had 25 turnovers and shot just 34 percent as a team, while the Bulldogs had just 11 turnovers and shot 50.9 percent from the field.
Montevallo took an early lead as Seymore hit a free throw to put the Falcons up 1-0. The Bulldogs responded with a 15-4 run to take a 10-point lead and never looked back. The first half ended with the Bulldogs in firm control, up 42-22.
Montevallo traded baskets with the Bulldogs much of the second half, but a late run by the home team stretched out the lead.
The Falcons will now prepare for their season and home opener Nov. 12 as they host in-state rival the University of North Alabama at 2 p.m. inside BankTrust Arena.
