Luther Garland Horton, Jr., born in Bessemer, on Jan. 31, 1931, son of the late Luther Garland Horton Sr. and Mabra Nabors Horton, passed away at a local hospital on Nov. 17, 2011. A Birmingham native, he attended elementary and high school locally and later became a naval veteran with exemplary service during the Korean War. Garland attended San Diego State College, Georgia State University and graduated from LSU’s Graduate School of Banking.

He moved to Pelham in 1972 to become president and chief executive officer of the town’s first bank, originally The Bank of Pelham. After many years in the banking industry, he worked for the U.S. Small Business Administration, from which he retired. Garland was a member of Riverchase United Methodist Church and for several years served as president of the Seekers Sunday School class. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Elaine, their children, Sharon, Katie and Michael (Lisa) and three grandchildren, Natalie, Joseph and Zachary.

Services will be held Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Riverchase United Methodist Church, with a visitation one hour prior to service. Officiating at the service will be Dr. Jim Savage, Reverend John Ray and Dr. Ed Underwood. A donation may be made in lieu of flowers to the Riverchase United Methodist Church Building Fund.
