Falcons down in-state rival West Alabama

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team won another close game at the Argonaut Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 19 following a 64-59 victory over in-state rival University of West Alabama.

The Falcons (3-1) were led by a trio of players, including senior Tiffany McClure, senior Davia Harris and sophomore Alex Strickland. McClure had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Harris and Strickland each had 10 points.

The Falcons shot 40 percent from the field, while West Alabama shot 41.9 percent. The difference came from beyond the 3-point arc, where Montevallo hit 7-of-24 while West Alabama hit just 2-of-13. Both teams were 5-of-10 from the free throw line.

Montevallo led most of the game but only by a slim margin. The Falcons’ largest lead was six which came midway through the first half. The Tigers held the lead a few times but their largest lead was just two points.

The first half ended in a 30-30 tie and the Falcons used a 34-29 advantage in the second half to win the game. The Tigers pulled the game to within two with 1:38 left in the second half but a lay-up by junior Trena Moore-Smith and a free throw by junior Teanna Boxley gave the Falcons a 64-59 victory.

The Falcons will return to action Nov. 22 as they travel to Miles College for a non-conference game.
