Montevallo women’s basketball team adds four signees

University of Montevallo women’s basketball head coach Cindy Hilbrich announced the signing of four recruits for the 2012-2013 season.

Jerrisa Green, Jasmine Newsome, Jasmine Thomas and Jackie Thompson will all join the Falcons as freshmen in the fall of 2012.

“I am very excited to have these four early signees,” Hilbrich said. “They are exactly the type of student-athletes we need to change the culture of Montevallo women’s basketball. All four have excellent grades and are outstanding basketball players. These four truly have outstanding careers ahead of them.”

Green is a 5-foot-10 forward from Florence. She is currently enrolled in Florence High School where last season she averaged 10.1 points per game, 6.7 rebounds and shot 73 percent from the line. She also plays volleyball and received the Lady Falcon Award this past season. She also received the Best All-Around Award and was named to the 6A Area 15 All-Area Team. She has also played three years of AAU basketball for the North Alabama Twisters, under coach Bob Harris. In 2010 her team won the 16 and under AAU State Championship. Last season she was team captain and averaged 17.5 points per game, 11.0 rebounds and three assists.

Newsome is a 5-10 guard from Alpharetta, Ga., where sheattends Alpharetta High School. Last season she averaged 5.1 points per game while shooting 34 percent from the field. She hit 74 percent of her attempts from the free throw line and averaged 3.1 rebounds per game. She was named to the 2011 Shaw Invitational All-Tournament Team as well as the 2011 Peach Slam Hoop Fest All-Tournament Team. She was selected as the MVP of 2009 YBOA National Division I Championship.

Thomas is a 5-8 guard from Bessemer, where she attends Shades Valley High School. Last season she averaged 9.3 points per game and eight rebounds per game. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a Shades Valley Ambassador. She has been a member of the Shades Valley High School’s Top Twenty over the past two years. She finished second in the FBLA State Competition for Global Business in 2010 and Introduction to Business in 2009. In 2011, she finished third in Business Ethics. She was a member of the All-County Choir for 2010-11.

Thompson is a 5-6 guard from Huntsville, where she attends Buckhorn High School. Last season she averaged 15 points per game, three assists, two steals and four rebounds. She made the 6A Area 16 All-Tournament Team as well. She competes for the AL Southern Starz in AAU basketball. Her team was the AAU Division Two National Champions last season and she scored 22 points in the Championship game, including making 6-of-7 threes in the first half. They finished fifth in the AAU Super Showcase, were the AL AAU Runner-Up and won the AAU Super Regional. In 2010, they finished 11th in the Nation, fifth at the AAU Super Showcase, were the AL AAU Runner-Up and won the AAU Super Regional. They also placed third at the FILA Nationals.

Green, Newsome, Thomas and Thompson are the first four players to sign under coach Hilbrich for the 2012-2013 season.
