Suspicious person apprehended by Sheriff’s deputies

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies apprehended a suspicious person after dispatchers received a report about 5:12 p.m. Monday evening.

The report came from Alston Farm Road, which is located outside of Columbiana, according to a press release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived in the area, they encountered the suspect in a vehicle. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and question the suspect, the suspect attempted to elude the deputies by running over a deputy with his vehicle. The deputy fired his duty weapon.

The suspect continued driving his vehicle for a short distance before wrecking, after which he fled on foot. The deputies located the suspect in nearby woods and apprehended him without further incident.

According to the press release, a search of the suspect’s vehicle revealed possible stolen property from the area. The deputy was not injured, and the suspect refused medical treatment for minor injuries. Formal charges are pending.
