Tips for dealing with county’s winter weather

The eyes of county residents again turned to weather forecasts and dropping temperatures with the news of possible light snowfall in Shelby County earlier this week. While this area rarely deals with significant snowfall, the approaching winter weather can still be dangerous without appropriate preparation.

According to the National Weather Service, residents should prep their homes and vehicles for winter weather by following some simple safety tips.

-In your home, check battery-powered equipment. Stock extra batteries for flashlights, as well as a portable TV or radio.

-Stock extra food and water, making sure to include plenty of food that requires no refrigeration. Don’t forget prescription medicines and first aid supplies.

-Stay indoors during storms and cold snaps. Dress to fit the weather with loose, layered clothing, as well as a hat and gloves or mittens.

-Don’t forget about your animals. Move them to sheltered areas. Provide fresh water and either bring them indoors or provide some form of heat.

-For your vehicle, check the oil, belts, tires and battery to make sure they are all in good working condition.

-Carry a winter car kit, especially if you’ll be traveling much during the winter. Consider including blankets or sleeping bags, flashlights and batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable foods, extra clothing, an ice scraper, water, road maps, a small shovel, rope, sand for traction and a cell phone charger.

-Always be sure someone knows your travel route and plans. Check weather information before leaving on any winter trip. Always seek shelter in a storm that tests your driving abilities.
