Montevallo tops Hale County in area opener

Clinging to a four-point lead after three periods, the Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team outscored Hale County 19-7 in the final quarter to take a 50-34 area win on the road Dec. 1.

Montevallo led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 25-20 at halftime, but the Wilcats stormed back midway through the third quarter to cut the lead to three at 29-26. With the Bulldogs’ inside game hampered by foul trouble, senior guard Kiah Smith took control by driving to the basket for the bulk of her game-high 23 points. Smith also added six rebounds and eight steals.

Forward Kayla Cunningham bolstered the Montevallo offense with 12 points and six rebounds, while Mychaela Thompson and Kerrington Maddox chipped in nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

BOYS

The Montevallo High School boys’ basketball team fell to Hale County 70-42 in high school basketball action Dec. 1.

Korey Cunningham led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the loss. Cunningham added 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Garrius Chappell added 11 points and six rebounds. Cortez Williams chipped in six points and five boards. Trevor Chatham contributed four points and four rebounds.

Bobby Anderson, Zach Tutwiler and A.J. Green, who had seven rebounds, finished with two points each. Daijon Young added one point. Marcus Ford grabbed one rebound.
