Calera overcomes Pelham in fourth quarter

After trailing for virtually all of three quarters, Calera High School started the final period on a 19-2 run to overtake visiting Pelham, 73-60, in boys’ basketball action Dec. 13

The Eagles (9-1) were down 53-51 at the end of the third quarter but gained control of the game as they held the Panthers to just one field goal in the first 6:17 of the fourth period to surge to a 70-55 lead.

Calera outscored Pelham (7-3) by a 22-7 margin in the last eight minutes.  The Panthers had led 14-10 after one quarter and 35-32 at halftime.

Deondre Haynes scored 22 points and Ronnie Clark added 17 to lead the Eagles.  Xavier Lacey scored 22 points for Pelham while Trey Hurst contributed 12.  Hurst also dished out a game-high six assists.

Turnovers played a role in the contest as the Panthers had 22 miscues while Calera had 16.

After shooting just 32 percent from the floor in the first half, the Eagles came back to connect on 48 percent of their shots after intermission.  Pelham was good on 60 percent of its field goals, hitting 24-of-40 from the floor.

GIRLS

The Pelham High School girls’ basketball team held off a second-half charge by Calera Tuesday to take a 45-39 victory Dec. 13.

The Panthers (9-2) led 26-13 at halftime but were outscored 12-5 in the third quarter.  The Eagles (4-3) maintained their momentum into the fourth quarter and took a 34-33 lead with 4:07 left in the game.  Pelham then went on a 9-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to regain control and put the game away.

Erin Whitman led all scorers in the game with 21 points for Pelham.  She also added eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Tyesha Haynes led Calera with 10 points. Perri Duncan and A’Kia Harris added eight points each. Maurina McClain finished with six points.
