Vincent edges Pelham in quarterfinals

The Vincent High School boys’ basketball team edged Pelham 52-44 in the Shelby County tournament quarterfinals Dec. 17.

Tyler Williams and Anterio Rogers scored 14 points each in the Yellow Jackets’ victory.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead 8-6 on a Rogers three-points at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter and never trailed again.  The Panthers kept it close for most of the game with Vincent building its largest lead at 41-32 early in the final period.

The Panthers (7-4) lost their second straight game for the first time this season after falling earlier in the week at Calera.

Vincent took advantage of 25 Pelham turnovers and also had numerous second chance baskets, taking advantage of 15 offensive rebounds, 11 of them in the first half.  Overall, the Panthers out-rebounded the Jackets, 34-31.

The Panthers, who were led by 14-point efforts by Xavier Lacey and Qadash Williams, hit 58 percent (11-of-19) of their field goals in the opening half but managed only 30 percent (6-of-20) after halftime.

The Yellow Jackets also hurt Pelham with the three-pointer, hitting 7-of-18 in the contest.  Dontravious Moon added 11 points for Vincent.
