Alvin Everett “Buddy” Churchwell, age 92, of Sterrett went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Dec. 28, 2011. He was born Sept. 21, 1919. Mr. Churchwell was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Churchwell; parents, Everett and Ida Churchwell; brother, Alfred Churchwell; and sister, Doris Howard. He is survived by his son, Kenneth Churchwell (Sandra), and daughters, Claudette Rowe (Don) and Brenda Culpepper (Jimmy). He is also survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He worked for Hayes International in Birmingham for 33 years. He was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church in Sterrett where he served as Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Leeds.

Visitation was Dec. 30, 2011 from 1-2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church in Sterrett. A graveside service followed at the Sterrett Cemetery with Rev. Arzell Hyche presiding.

The most important thing in Mr. Churchwell’s life was his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. His life was a living testimony of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

He spent many years working as a carpenter building houses for other people. But he is now residing in a mansion of his own that was prepared for him by our Lord. “In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:2-3)

Thank you for being a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Thank you for being our hero. Thank you for loving your neighbor as yourself. Most of all, thank you for demonstrating to the world what it means to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. (Micah 6:8)
