The Alabaster Police Department has charged Daniel M. Acker, 49, of Alabaster, with one additional count of sexual abuse first degree, two days after he was arrested and charged with three counts of the same offense.

The bond for this charge is $500,000, bringing Acker’s total bond to $545,000.

“This charge is the result of evidence obtained in our ongoing investigation into Mr. Acker.” Alabaster Deputy Chief Curtis Rigney wrote in a press release. “This charge is in addition to the three charges he is currently being held on.”

According to police, the victim in the latest case reported Acker would come to her home while her mother was not there. The victim, who was 11 years old at the time, said Acker molested her in the home. When questioned by detectives, Acker admitted he did molest the child, Rigney said.

Acker was a fourth-grade teacher for most of his career with the Shelby County Board of Education. He worked from 1985 till 1991 at Thompson Elementary School, from 1991 until 2000 at Creekview Elementary, and from 2000 till 2009 at Thompson Intermediate. He retired in May 2009.

Rigney said the investigation is ongoing, and said he expected more charges will be filed in the future.

“We are working closely with the Shelby County Board of Education and the Alabama Department of Human Resources in this investigation,” Rigney wrote.
