Calera falls to Midfield in area contest

The Calera High School boys’ basketball team fell to visiting Midfield 67-61 in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 13.

Deondre Haynes led the Eagles (16-4 overall, 2-2 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with 18 points.

Titus Adams and Ronnie Clark added 11 points each.

Jeremy Hyde chipped in nine points. Howard Morris contributed eight points.

The Eagles raced out to a 19-14 lead following the first quarter. However, Midfield outscored Calera 22-8 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead at halftime.

Calera cut the deficit to four points in the final minute, but the Patriots knocked down free throws to ice the victory.

GIRLS

The Calera High School girls’ basketball team fell to Midfield 53-36 in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 13.

Tyesha Haynes led the Eagles (9-7 overall, 3-1 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with 17 points.

A’Kia Harris added 11 points.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but a 19-2 run by Midfield in the middle of the opening half allowed the Patriots to run away with the victory.
