Pirates steal victory from Falcons

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team led for 38 of the 40 minutes in regulation against Armstrong Atlantic State University, but a late comeback by the Pirates gave Armstrong a 58-56 victory Jan. 19.

The Falcons (6-9 overall, 1-5 in Peach Belt Conference) had the Pirates on the ropes up 12 points with 7:25 left to play, but an 18-4 run by Armstrong to close out the game squashed Montevallo’s chances.

The Falcons were led by freshman Taylor Beverly, who had 16 points off the bench. Senior Shavonne Seymore chipped in 13 points, while senior Tiffany McClure added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Falcons shot 41.8 percent from the field and just 16.7 percent from 3-point range. Armstrong shot 40.7 percent from the field and was held without a 3-pointer. Montevallo won the turnover battle but lost in points off turnovers, 13-6. The Pirates dominated the glass, outrebounding the Falcons 41-30.

Montevallo opened the game with a 10-4 run, capped by a Seymore layup with 14:05 left to play in the first. Montevallo pushed its lead up to 10 points at the 9:54 mark as Seymore once again hit a layup. Down 26-16 with 5:11 to play in the first half, the Pirates went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 26-26 with 2:26 remaining. A Beverly jumper and McClure layup gave the Falcons a 30-26 halftime lead.

Montevallo slowly built its lead in the second half, eventually taking a 52-40 advantage with 7:25 to play. The Pirates then went on an 18-4 run to close out the game, 58-56.

The Falcons will look to regroup Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m. as they travel to Flagler College for another Peach Belt Conference contest.
