Lions top Bessemer Academy in area contest

The Kingwood Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Bessemer Academy 42-15 in an Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 3A, Area 2 contest Jan. 24.

Casey Whitmer led the Lions (7-14 overall, 2-2 in AISA Class 3A, Area 2) with 17 points in the victory. Whitmer also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Madelyn Pearce added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Katie Etheridge chipped in six points and six rebounds.

Rachel Wray contributed three points. Blair Holsombeck finished with two points and four rebounds to go along with a team-high six steals.

Kenzie Greer finished with seven rebounds and two steals. Kalee Sides grabbed two rebounds. Sarah Salmon dished out three assists. Karley Chamblee had one rebound and one steal.

BOYS

The Kingwood Christian School boys’ basketball team fell to Bessemer Academy 60-38 in an Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 3A, Area 2 contest Jan. 24.

Daniel Fillingim led the Lions (8-13 overall, 0-4 in AISA Class 3A, Area 2) with 13 points. Fillingim, who finished with four blocked shots, also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Jacob Bussey added eight points and six rebounds. Josh Purvis and Charles Robinson added six points each.

Jared Stewart chipped in three points. Jordan Vance contributed two points.
