FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team suffered another heartbreaking loss Jan. 26, this time at the hands of No. 15 USC Aiken.

The Falcons (7-10 overall, 2-6 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by junior Teanna Boxley, who scored 13 points. Senior Shavonne Seymore added 11 points, while freshman Taylor Beverly chipped in eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Falcons out-shot the Pacers 40.4 percent to 32.8 percent from the field but lost the rebounding battle 43-33 and the turnover battle 14-8. UM hot 70.0 percent from the free throw line while USCA hit just 37.5 percent from the charity stripe.

USCA opened the game on a 9-2 run but the Falcons quickly cut the lead to just one-point with 11:32 left in the first period. Just under a minute later the Pacers began a 12-2 run to take a 24-14 lead with 4:09 remaining. UM made a slight comeback as the Falcons entered halftime down 31-23.

USCA held the Falcons at bay for the opening minutes of the second half but with 11:49 left to play UM went on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to just two with 8:23 left to play. UM eventually took the lead at the 6:27 mark as junior Trena Moore-Smith hit an old-fashion three-point play with a jumper and free throw. The Pacers then ended the game with a 8-2 run to take the 52-47 victory.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. as they host Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta State University.
