The Harpersville Medical Clinic, the city of Harpersville and the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a mile-and-a-half walk to bring awareness to heart disease.

The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Harpersville United Methodist Church on Highway 25, go down Farmingdale Road and then on to the Morgan Creek vineyards.

“If they don’t or can’t return the mile and a half back to the church the tour bus will be at the vineyards to take them back,” said Jennifer Nesbitt, spokesperson for the Harpersville Medical Clinic.

There is a registration fee of five dollars and all participants will receive a T-shirt and ‘heart-healthy snacks’.

“Everyone I’ve talked to is so excited. To my knowledge, no one has ever done anything like this in Harpersville,” said Nesbitt. “Heart disease is the number one killer for women. If (this walk) sends one person male or female to the doctor to ask about heart-related symptoms then I feel like we definitely benefitted the awareness of the walk.”

Nesbitt said that after she became a part of the Harpersville Medical Clinic on Jan. 9 the city immediately showed her true Southern hospitality.

“Harpersville stole my heart from day one. They took us in and this is a way to give back and there is much more to come,” she said. “We want people to feel comfortable coming to us. We want to be a part of that community.”

As an added treat, Morgan Creek Winery will have wine and chocolates available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 11 as well.

The Harpersville Medical Clinic has care providers available on Mondays through Thursdays and is open Mondays through Fridays. To make an appointment or register to participate in the walk please call 672-2401.
