Andrew “Andy” John Johnson, age 82, of Columbiana died Feb. 4, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Birmingham. He was born Aug. 5, 1929 in Pierson, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Ethel Johnson. He joined the Army in June 1948 at age 19 after graduating from high school. He retired in June 1975 as an E6 Sergeant Calibration Specialist after tours in the Vietnam War. Upon retiring from the military, Mr. Johnson worked with Ford Aerospace as an electronic specialist and traveled with his job to Kwajalein, Turkey, Denmark, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Texas and California until retirement to Alabama.

Mr. Johnson married Caroline Hackett on Dec. 31, 1950, and they recently celebrated their 61st anniversary. His beloved wife, Caroline, followed him all over the world with their four children.

Mr. Johnson was a 43-year member of the American Legion, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and member of Columbiana United Methodist Church. He enjoyed amateur radio and electronics, loved to travel and tell stories. Mr. Johnson loved people.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lucretia Johnson, Maude Johnson Kuhn and Virginia Johnson Jensen; and three children, Randy Johnson, Louis Johnson and Jean Johnson Passon.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline; two children, Lura Johnson Campbell (Stephen) and Lisa Shupe; nine grandchildren, Tricia Passon Keith, Andrea Passon Workman, Crystal Passon Hartshorn, April Shupe deVara, Danielle Shupe, Andrew Shupe, Mary Shupe, Christine Campbell Pino and Scott Campbell; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Bertha Johnson Wood (Harold); and three brothers, Willis Johnson, Leroy Johnson (Jean) and Charles Johnson (Carolyn).

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Columbiana United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall (Heart4God Room). Visitation and a reception will follow the service. The funeral will be Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at 2:45 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119 in Montevallo, Alabama.
